Their Story to Tell

Flowers now carpet where most of them fell,
Taking part in that bloody tug of war,
Dead and diminished, their story to tell.

Split seconds shattered by a single shell,
Losing good men for a few yards more,
Flowers now carpet where most of them fell.

Vanquished from earth but none were for hell,
“Over the top lads, lets hear that roar!”
Dead and diminished, their story to tell.

The mud and their blood in an underground well,
Searing pain from the shrapnel as it hit, then tore,
Flowers now carpet where most of them fell.

No time to comfort nor say our farewell,
Belief in religion now shot to the core,
Dead and diminished, their story to tell.

The last thing they heard was the liberty bell,
Everything changed to what was there before,
Flowers now carpet where most of them fell,
Dead and diminished, their story to tell.

  1. adventures says:

    Beautifully written 🙂

  2. The flowers are happy to find
    all those nutrients left behind.

    Otherwise, what’s the point?
    Blooming fields, and some
words to fill a history book?

Wouldn’t I love to take ’em
    back behind a barn and
learn ’em how to grow up.

    Before they turned their
    lives into earth fertilized
    with anger turned to dust.

    And all for us.

Go on, give me some feedback..
